How to fix a broken home button for £300 on an iPhone

The correct way:-
  1. Turn phone off.
  2. Remove little screws.
  3. Use sucker to remove screen.
  4. Remove LCD.
  5. Replace Home Button + circuit.
  6. Put back together.
My way:-
  1. Break car windscreen with log.
  2. Get quote from High Street shop because I've been moaned at by wife for being careless with car and "with your luck you'll break the phone". Quote: £20.
  3. Buy bits from eBay - £3.
  4. Turn phone off.
  5. Remove screen.
  6. Prise out LCD with tools provided and crack LCD making it almost impossible to use.
  7. Buy new screen & LCD off eBay - £22.
  8. Replace the lot, turn on - screen doesn't work.
  9. Take out new screen.
  10. Alarm goes off on phone about a meeting and can't turn off alarm because there's no screen in it.
  11. Press little button on side to snooze alarm.
  12. Replace old screen in case new one is duff - old screen doesn't work now either.
  13. Alarm goes off again.
  14. Try new screen again - doesn't work.
  15. Alarm goes off again. Phone working but with no screen. Have several phone calls but have absolutely no idea who from.
  16. Give up and go to a meeting, leave phone on desk hoping the battery will go flat.
  17. Put all the bits into a bag and go to High Street shop with embarrased look.
  18. They try - old screen, new screen and one of their new screens - none of them work. "Your phone's shagged, mate".
  19. Need to get back for another afternoon meeting, desperately need a phone so buy only phone available on my network - an iPhone 4S for £300.
  20. Man in shop puts old phone back together with my new "eBay" screen.
  21. Still doesn't work.
  22. Colleague at work says "stick it on eBay, but wipe phone first with factory reset".
  23. Plug into iTunes and back up data and then do factory reset.
  24. Go out to evening business lunch.
And here's the good bit:- Come home and find the old iPhone 3 has done a factory reset and the new screen is working like a charm.

Haven't told the wife yet.
